Near the old abattoir there used to be the starting point for the Venetian
oarsmen. The name of this "trattoria" maintains the fascination of this
world which is reflected in the strategic position of the establishment, in
front of the sea which separates Venice from the mainland, in a typically
maritime setting defined by the dark wood of the tables and walls.
The menu changes every day to cater for the needs of the various
clientele that habitually visit the trattoria: at lunch time a fixed menu for
the local workmen, and during the evenings a typically Venetian cuisine.
There are no special "house" dishes since the menu follows the course of
the seasons. Unforgettable are the grey shrimps with white polenta; the
little octupus Torcello style and the Greek sardines, which according to an
ancient "Serenissima" recipe are fresh anchovies "cooked" in vinegar. An
authentic speciality are the black tagliolini with mussels, fresh tomatoes
and basil. During the winter months, don't miss the sea bass cooked in a
bag made of pasta and bread, stuffed with black olives, bay leaves and
spices. The mixed fried fish is prepared in a special oil which leaves it
deliciously crunchy. Spaghetti alla busara, bigoli in sauce, pumpkin tortelli
with fresh scampi and courgette flowers or lasagne with asparagus and
shrimps are all unforgettable first dishes! When in season, the plates of
pasta are served with a sauce of castraure..........tiny artichokes.
